[Lecture] The Small Secret Sociology of Jane Austen Subjectivities, Hierarchy, Context
You are invited to attend a guest lecture by Chris Wilkes, Vice Provost for Research and Professor of Sociology at Pacific University USA
The Small Secret Sociology of Jane Austen Subjectivities, Hierarchy, Context
The interiority of Jane Austen's novels leads most sociologists to conclude that they are a lost cause. A claim can be made, however, that this focus on the interior life offers a largely unexplored avenue into social subjectivities and social habitus. More than this, Austen's account of largely rural, domestic life is rife with judgements about hierarchy and social context. Using Bourdieu's theory of habitus, field and capital as a backdrop, we can begin to form a picture of the social fields, capitals and positionalities that formed in Austen's period.
The lecture will take place on Tuesday 16th November at 17:00 in De Grey Mini Lecture Theatre (DG/014). Please note that this is a change of venue.. There will be a sparkling wine and canape reception afterwards in the Second Floor Lounge, Fountains Learning Centre.
No prior booking is required. We hope to see you there.

This means that the Search functions for Catalogue and Catalogue Plus will be unavailable during this time. However, you will still be able to renew and check your loans and use the old catalogue interface.
