Delays to British Library Inter-Library loan requests 16 December 2010

The British Library has discovered asbestos in some of the buildings that house its collections at Boston Spa. As such they are closing these areas until the asbestos can be removed. This means that we are receiving replies from the British Library that are telling us they will not be able to supply some items on inter-library loan for 3-8 weeks. Where possible we are trying to source the items from other libraries, but please be aware that there may be extra delays in the processing of your inter-library loans in this period.

Thank you for your patience.

Possible disruption to off-campus access to eJournals and eBooks 14 December 2010

Eduserv will be making unscheduled maintenance changes to all OpenAthens Services on the 14th December 2010 between 10:00 - 17:30. This is to address a security vulnerability with a third party email software component called Exim. They do not anticipate these changes to be service affecting, however the service should be considered ‘at risk’ whilst they implement these changes.

This may lead to disruption to access to eJournals and eBooks off-campus during this time.

We are currently experiencing some technical issues on campus with accessing electronic journals from Ovid Online (e.g. American journal of occupational therapy). We hope to have them working again soon.

We do not believe that this is an issue off-campus, but if you experience any difficulty accessing Ovid Online journals when outside the university, please contact libraryqueries@yorksj.ac.uk and let us know the title and the nature of the error.

Inter-library loan requests and the Christmas break

The inter-library loan service will stop processing requests for books from Monday 13 December 2010 until 4 January 2011. This is to ensure that books do not arrive during the period that the university is closed. Please try to consider this when making your inter-library loan requests.

Also, if you think that you might want to renew your inter-library loan book to use over the Christmas period, please make your renewal request before the 13th December 2010 so that we have time to get a reply from the owning library before the university closes. We will not be processing any renewal requests after the 13th.

[Lecture] The Small Secret Sociology of Jane Austen Subjectivities, Hierarchy, Context

You are invited to attend a guest lecture by Chris Wilkes, Vice Provost for Research and Professor of Sociology at Pacific University USA

The Small Secret Sociology of Jane Austen Subjectivities, Hierarchy, Context

The interiority of Jane Austen's novels leads most sociologists to conclude that they are a lost cause. A claim can be made, however, that this focus on the interior life offers a largely unexplored avenue into social subjectivities and social habitus. More than this, Austen's account of largely rural, domestic life is rife with judgements about hierarchy and social context. Using Bourdieu's theory of habitus, field and capital as a backdrop, we can begin to form a picture of the social fields, capitals and positionalities that formed in Austen's period.

The lecture will take place on Tuesday 16th November at 17:00 in De Grey Mini Lecture Theatre (DG/014). Please note that this is a change of venue.. There will be a sparkling wine and canape reception afterwards in the Second Floor Lounge, Fountains Learning Centre.

No prior booking is required. We hope to see you there.
